Alternative Education Programs

Independence Program

for students with Asperger Syndrome and other Neurocognitive Disorders

For many students with AS or other neurocognitive disabilities the traditional educational setting can be difficult to navigate socially and academically.  Some students with AS have difficulty sucessfully making the transition to a high school setting and as a result do poorly academically and socially.  Through the Cape Cod Collaborative Independence Program, students can find a balance of supportive programming in a highly structured setting with opportunities for integration with their peers.

The I.P. provides programming on a continuum, which is flexible and responsive to the changing needs of the student and their family.  Students who require intensive programming may remain in the I.P for the day working on academics, social skills and communication skills.  For other student's, they may spend their day in a more traditional setting and recieve "coaching" throughout the day.

The is no one proven approach to working sucessfully with students with AS.  The I.P. incorporates a variety of approaches aimed at building confidence and independence.  A multi-disciplinary team works to develop a comprehensive plan that meets the student's unique needs.

All students in the I.P. are provided with high quality academic instruction that is based on the Massachusetts Frameworks and is appropriate to the student's grade level.  Students may access curricular materials at different access points. Class size is no larger that 8:2 and students are encouraged to actively engage in and take responsibility for their learning.  Educational programming at the I.P. fully implements the student's IEP and will prepare them to take the MCAS (or MCAS-alt).
